Nicolas Richard Lee Deas, 20, of Fort Lauderdale, and another man allegedly approached a Family Dollar employee on September 13 around 10 p.m. as staff closed for the day, Local 10 News reported. Deas reportedly claimed to the employee that he left his cell phone in the store and had to quickly run to grab it. The employee let Deas and the other man in, but the situation quickly descended into chaos. “Give me the money or I will kill you,” Deas told the clerk, according to a Fort Lauderdale police arrest report. The employee walked the couple to the store’s safe, where the suspects put $1,200 in cash in a bag.

Deas pistol-whipped the employee in the neck and elbow, according to the police report. Unknown to Deas and his accomplice, the owner of a neighboring store in the shopping complex heard the disturbance and sprang into action. Police said the man entered the store, saw Deas with a gun in his hand and demanded that he drop the gun and get on the ground. Deas complied with orders, while the other suspect fled. The armed good Samaritan held Deas at gunpoint until police arrived. Deas was held without bail on charges of armed robbery, aggravated assault with intent to commit a felony, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, grand theft of a firearm and unlawful carrying of a concealed firearm. According to police, the gun Deas used during the alleged robbery attempt was stolen. The accomplice has not been identified and it is unclear if he has been arrested.
