Nicola Courtney, a 34-year-old mother, and her three-year-old son Lucas Page are killed in a horrific accident after their car broke down in the hot lane of a dual carriageway and they were struck by a truck.

Nicola, a mother, and her three-year-old son who died in a crash in Lincolnshire have been identified by police. Nicola, 34, and Lucas Page, from Scunthorpe, were in a parked Ford Focus when it was struck by a truck at around 21:00 GMT on Friday.

The accident occurred on the A180 in Immingham, between Stallingborough and Brocklesby, Humberside Police said. A force spokesman said he had made a “voluntary referral” to the Independent Office for Police Complaints (IOPC).

Officers said they believe the car had broken down on the westbound section of the dual carriageway before the accident. The force said a “complex investigation” was now underway to establish the full circumstances.

The BBC has asked the force to clarify why it was referred to the police watchdog. The families of Ms. Courtney and Lucas were being supported by specially trained officers, Humberside Police said.
