Nguyet Le, a Louisiana woman who died after becoming locked in an Arby’s walk-in freezer was a widowed mother of four on a temporary assignment at the fast food company, according to a source.
Nguyet Le, 63, was working as an Arby’s general manager and was about to open the restaurant in New Iberia, La., about 30 minutes south of Lafayette, when she became trapped inside the freezer on May 11 “and beat her hands bloody trying to escape or get someone’s attention,” according to a lawsuit filed this week.

Le normally worked in a Houston Arby’s but had relocated for a month at the request of the company, according to McClatchy News Service. After that, the assignment in Louisiana was prolonged. Foul play is not suspected in Le’s death, according to her lawyers, who highlighted that the temperature inside the freezer likely fluctuated from 5 to -20 degrees.
It’s unknown how long Le was trapped inside the freezer until she was discovered. She died of hypothermia after being in the freezer for so long that she “collapsed into a fetal position face down on the frozen floor,” according to court documents. Nguyen, Le’s son, who also worked at Arby’s and had moved to Louisiana with his mother, discovered her body. A former employee told the family the freezer door’s latch had been broken for months, McClatchy reported.
