Nathan Thorburn, an s*x offender, was jailed for rape after he was caught texting his victim. Nathan Thorburn, 25, sent the victim a message on Facebook saying that he “wanted some kind of closure.” He raped a woman in student accommodation while she was unconscious in Cardiff in 2019.
The rapist forced her until she woke up in the middle of the attack due to her immense pain, according to Wales Online. The predator, who has a criminal record, apologized the next day but did not explain. Years later, Thorburn contacted the victim in 2022 asking her to talk about what happened because he wanted “closure.”
Cardiff Crown Court heard this week that the couple had been drinking alcohol and at the end of the night, Thornburn offered to put her to bed as he was passing out. At times, the victim thought he was her boyfriend and “didn’t know Thorburn was all over her.” Prosecutor James Wilson added that the woman “was in pain and wanted to scream” but she “could only let out a moan.”

The victim told police that she was unaware of the full extent of what he had done to her and that she was initially going to ‘take it to her grave’ to cope. She did not know if he was wearing a condom and she described herself as feeling ‘desecrated, dirty, vile and disgusting’ by what the defendant had done and ‘feeling like a corpse’ while it was happening. Thorburn, from Kingsway, Cardiff, was sent to prison in 2019 for an unrelated matter and made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
After his release from prison, he contacted the victim on Facebook messenger, the victim, in turn, accused him of ‘massaging his ego’ by turning to the woman he raped to absolve his guilt. He wrote: ‘Hello. We can talk? I wanted to talk about the situation between you and me before I went to prison. I think I knew what I did was wrong and I want some kind of closure I guess. ‘I think it’s good to talk about these things with that person to be sure of this. For a long time, things have been going through my head that I want to put aside.
His response was: ‘I don’t even know where to start. I can give you closure in a simple sentence. You are a rapist. ‘First, even texting me is incredibly selfish and selfish. I reread the message you sent and I can count how many times you say ‘I’. ‘Do you want closure because it’s playing on your mind? You want to end up assaulting me when I was drunk, passed out, and vulnerable and lay me down. I will never get closure. It will last me a lifetime.

The rapist had prior convictions for accessing indecent images of children
The victim then blocked him before compiling the messages into a document that she distributed to a sexual assault referral service. The document was picked up by the defendant’s crime administrator, who visited him on June 13, 2022. The victim was subsequently identified and formally interviewed. He was arrested and pleaded guilty to the rape and rape of an SHPO after it was discovered that he had deleted his internet history.
The rapist had prior convictions for accessing indecent images of children and was first convicted in 2019 for accessing 14 Category A images, 19 Category B images, and 149 Category C images. He was later convicted on another count of accessing indecent photos of a child in January 2020, as well as violating an SHPO by viewing images of children being raped. In a statement read out in court, the victim said the incident is “a scab for life that I will remove forever and ever.” Hilary Roberts, of Thorburn, said that while mitigation for his client was “little”, she had recognized that his behavior was “wrong”, causing her concern and anxiety.
He received an extended 13-year sentence that includes a nine-year custody term with a four-year extended license period. Thorburn will serve two-thirds of the custody element of the sentence before being eligible for parole. If he is released, he will serve the remaining term of the custodial sentence on leave before serving the extended leave period. He was also the subject of a restraining order that prohibited him from contacting or approaching the victim or entering any place where she lives, works, or studies. He will now be on the s*x offender registry for life.
