Naledi Roberts, a teenager has been charged with felony child abuse after recording herself lighting a joint and forcing a young child to inhale.

Naledi Roberts, 17, was arrested by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Friday after detectives discovered the footage. On Thursday, March 23, officers responded to a private residence in unincorporated Largo for allegations of child abuse. She initially admitted to smoking marijuana around the victim, a one-year-old girl, whom she was babysitting for her 16-year-old friend, the boy’s mother. But after officers confronted her with the footage of her, she admitted to placing the cigarette in the victim’s mouth. Roberts can be seen placing the lit joint in the baby’s mouth, then she inhales and the coals in her glow brighter. She then removes it from the victim’s mouth and places it in her own before inhaling, though it’s unclear how officers were able to obtain the footage of her. After her arrest, she refused to provide an explanation as to why she put the drug in the boy’s mouth.

Roberts was then arrested and charged with one felony count of child abuse and was transported to the Pinellas Juvenile Assessment Center. A spokeswoman for the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office told DailyMail.com that the boy did not appear to have suffered any lasting injuries from the incident. They added that it was unclear if Roberts had posted the images online or how officers discovered them. Roberts has no criminal record other than two moving violations for driving with a learner’s permit without a person 21 or older in the passenger seat. He paid two fines of $166 for each violation, one in October 2021 and the second in December 2022.

In Florida, the punishment for child abuse in Florida varies depending on the defendant’s prior conviction and the impact of the acts. As a third-degree felony, child abuse or neglect that does not cause bodily harm, disfigurement, or disability is punishable by up to five years in prison and/or fines of up to $5,000. The most severe forms of child abuse often result in harsher penalties.
