Nahel Merzouk Wiki – Nahel Merzouk Biography
The murder of Nahel Merzouk ignited long-simmering tensions between police and youth in France’s housing projects, who are battling poverty and unemployment. He was shot during rush hour on Tuesday morning as he was driving a car in Nanterre, a small town on the outskirts of Paris. A passenger in the car posted a video on social media saying that he wants to “establish the truth… because there are a lot of lies on social media.” Saying that he wants to “tell you the story from A to Z”, the young man explains that they borrowed the Mercedes and decided to take a drive around Nanterre, adding: “We were not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”
They were driving in the bus lane when they noticed the police motorcycles following them with flashing lights and stopped the car. He says an officer went to the car window and told Nahel to roll it down before saying, “Turn off the engine or I’ll shoot you.” The youth claims that the officer then struck Nahel with the butt of his gun, then the second officer arrived and also struck Nahel with the butt of his gun. He says the first officer then put a gun to Nahel’s head and said, “Don’t move or I’ll put a bullet in your head.” The youth alleges that the second officer said, “Shoot him.”

He says the first officer then struck Nahel again with the butt of the gun, causing him to release his foot from the brake pedal and the car moving forward. He says the second officer fired his gun, so Nahel stepped on the gas. “I saw him in pain, he was shaking,” he says. “We came to a barrier. “I was scared. I got out of the vehicle. And I ran. I thought they were going to shoot me. So I ran.” And he adds: “I am shocked by what happened in front of me. To my friend.” The use of the weapon by the officer is not legally justified, says the prosecutor
The officer who shot and killed Nahel has apologized to his family. Nanterre prosecutor Pascal Prache said officers tried to stop the teen because he appeared too young and he was driving a Mercedes with Polish license plates in a bus lane. He allegedly ran a red light to avoid being pulled over and then got stuck in traffic. The officer said he feared that he and his colleague or someone else might be hit by the car as Nahel tried to flee, according to the prosecutor. Prache said his initial investigation had led him to conclude that the officer’s use of his weapon was not legally justified. The officer has been placed under formal investigation for voluntary manslaughter and is being held in pretrial detention. Under the French legal system, being subjected to a formal investigation is similar to being charged in the UK.
