Murray Melvin, a legendary actor who worked with Michael Caine and Stanley Kubrick, died at the age of 90.
The English actor, born on August 10, 1932, in London, played in the Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood and was recognized for his collaborations with Joan Littlewood, Ken Russell, and Stanley Kubrick. In 1957, he made his stage debut in Macbeth at the Stratford Theatre Royal. He went on to appear in films such as Alfie (1966), in which he co-starred with Michael Caine, Barry Lyndon (1975), and The Phantom of the Opera (2004).

Death of Murray Melvin: Tributes
Melvin received tributes on social media after winning the BAFTA film award for Most Promising Newcomer and the Cannes Film Festival Best Actor prize for his part in A Taste of Honey (1961).
Kerry Kyriacos is a Greek writer. ‘It’s with tremendous regret that I have to announce the death of Murray Melvin – actor, director, and theatre archivist,’ said Michael MBE, artistic director at Theatro Technis, on Twitter.
‘He had a tumble in December and never fully recovered. He died on Friday, April 14th, at the age of 90, at St Thomas’ Hospital. He was one of my best friends and will be greatly missed by all of us who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Russell T Davies paid tribute to the singer by reflecting on his career.
‘Murray Melvin (1932-2023), bless him, he portrayed the fantastic evil Bilis Manger in Torchwood, and he adored it! ‘However, what a career!’ he exclaimed on Instagram.
On stage and screen, he played the legendary gay Geoffrey in A Taste of Honey. Lots of collaboration with Joan Littlewood and Ken Russell. Amazing. ‘What a gentleman.’
‘He lived through a century that saw the notion of his identity shift so radically,’ Davies remarked, ‘and he did so with dignity, class, and wit.’
