Michael Jones, 26, from Kirkby, Merseyside, was taken to Aintree Hospital on Monday but died despite medics’ best efforts. In an emotional statement released by his family today, it was revealed he was a lifelong Everton supporter who was ‘so happy’ to be working on the new stadium, as they paid tribute to their ‘beloved’ son.

First responders were called to the site at Bramley Moore Dock at around 12:32 p.m. today after a “major incident” allegedly involving heavy machinery. The worker was rushed to the hospital, but despite the best efforts of the doctors, he died. Construction company Laing O’Rourke confirmed to MailOnline that the man was working at the time of his death. Investigators from Merseyside Police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) remain on site as they “continue the early stages of the investigation”. Site workers at Bramley Moore Dock said they were informed of the incident and then asked to leave the area, but were unable to share any further details, The Liverpool Echo reported. Local reports indicate that the incident involved heavy machinery and that the 26-year-old suffered head injuries. The North West Ambulance Service said they were called at 12:32 p.m. An air ambulance and a road ambulance arrived at the scene, with the latter taking a patient to the hospital.

Merseyside Police, in a statement to MailOnline, said their officers were called to the scene around 1pm. from today. A spokesman said: “The man was taken to hospital where he was sadly pronounced dead. His closest relatives have been informed. As of 5:00 p.m. today, officers remain on the scene while they “continue the early stages of the investigation.” An HSE spokesperson added: “We can confirm that we have been made aware of an incident and we are investigating.” Both Laing O’Rourke and Everton Football Club confirmed the incident. A Laing O’Rourke spokesperson told MailOnline: ‘We can confirm that earlier today a member of our team, who was carrying out work for one of our subcontractors, was seriously injured in an incident. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance, where he sadly passed away.

We are shocked and saddened by today’s tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased and our project team as a whole. ‘Police and the Health and Safety Executive are on site and we have suspended work until further notice. We will fully cooperate with any further investigation.’ Everton FC said: “Everyone at Everton Football Club is heartbroken by the news that a worker has died following an incident on the site of Everton Stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock. Stadium contractor Laing O’Rourke immediately started an investigation and will work with the police and the Health and Safety Executive to establish all the details of the incident.
