Mercado-Ocasio, a 19-year-old collegiate baseball player, was killed in Pennsylvania after a homemade dugout fell on him.
Angel Mercado-Ocasio and his teammates from Central Penn College in Harrisburg had constructed a wooden dugout on a public field in Cumberland County. However, local authorities notified the team that they did not have a permit to build there and urged them to demolish it. On Monday, as they were dismantling the wooden-framed dugout, it collapsed on top of Mercado-Ocasio, causing a serious head injury. He was admitted to the hospital and died the next day as a result of his injuries.
Mercado-Ocasio was 19 years old.

Friends and coaches described him as a happy boy who was missed. Angel had a huge heart. He was a sweet little boy. ‘I simply questioned why it had to be him,’ Angel’s buddy Alejandro Escudero told Fox43 News. Coach Cuba, one of Mercado-Ocasio’s coaches, has been taking the loss hard and blaming himself. ‘I don’t want to be a jerk in front of everybody, but when they told me I had to take it down… I did. ‘However, tearing it down cost my kids their lives,’ Coach Cuba explained.
I did everything I could to keep him safe. They irritate me. “Please stop fooling around,” I tell them. However, children will be children. And, certainly, I am still liable.’ Wanda Williams, the mayor of Harrisburg, acknowledged his death at a press conference. ‘He died while helping others in the sport he loved. ‘It’s heartbreaking,’ added Williams. ‘Angel embraced so many people, and now we must embrace this memory,’ she says.
According to Alyssa Kratz of Fox43, the city of Harrisburg claims no legal action has been taken against it and that it has no plans to take action against the coach or players.
