Melissa Caddick, an alleged fraudster who went missing more than two years ago only to have her decaying foot wash up on a beach months later, has been declared dead by a coroner.
Melissa Caddick vanished from her Sydney home in November 2020, sparking a slew of hypotheses in Australia, fueled by inconsistent statements made by her husband, Anthony Koletti. The 49-year-old went missing the day after police raided her home to look into allegations that she stole up to $30 million (£15.8 million) from over 60 clients, including relatives and friends, to fund her extravagant lifestyle.
For over eight years, the seemingly successful financial consultant allegedly ran a Ponzi scheme. Caddick was also accused of impersonating a financial consultant and forging documents. Following Caddick’s disappearance, several conspiracy theories surfaced, with some suggesting that she was swallowed by a shark or cut off her foot to confuse authorities while they searched for her.
According to an inquest investigating her death, her husband informed police that she left the house at 5.30 a.m. on November 12, 2020, leaving her car, phone, and personal items behind. Mr. Koletti, a hairdresser and DJ did not report his wife missing for 30 hours. Three months later, in February 2021, a foot was discovered on a beach on New South Wales’ extreme south coast and DNA tests linked it to Caddick. Initially, police stated that they were investigating two theories: that the alleged fraudster was still alive and had gone into hiding to avoid prosecution, or that she had committed herself.

However, the inquest heard that the woman’s husband had become erratic in the aftermath of her disappearance, leading authorities to assume he was involved. Mr. Koletti denied knowing about his wife’s misdeeds or being involved in her disappearance. Police stated they found no evidence to back up their claim. Deputy State Coroner Elizabeth Ryan has now decided that Caddick dies, although the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and eventual death remain unknown.
“The conclusion I have reached is that Melissa Caddick is deceased,” she wrote. However, I do not believe the evidence supports a positive finding as to how she died, or when and where this happened.”Magistrate Ryan further stated that when Caddick’s deceit was revealed and her image of accomplishment was shattered, she may have felt “shame and despair,” and that “she may well have concluded that ending her life was the only option.” However, it looks that the cause of her death will go unresolved. The woman’s clients, who have lost large sums of money over the years, are similarly unlikely to receive justice, according to the court.
“I sold my business because I thought my money was safe,” a victim stated, “and I retired in 2017.”To add salt to the wound, she has also stolen money from my mother, wife, mother-in-law, son, brother, and sister… erasing three generations of my family’s wealth. Caddick’s misdeeds, according to Ms. Ryan, left her victims with a “profound sense of betrayal.” “For many, their losses represented all of the money they had saved for retirement or their children’s education,” she said. The financial and emotional damage they have sustained will have long-term consequences.”
The coroner also criticized Mr. Koletti in the ruling, stating his testimony was “riddled” with contradictory claims. However, she stated that it was difficult to establish whether his flaws had altered the direction of the investigation. “I regret that positive findings as to the cause and manner of Ms. Caddick’s death cannot be made,” the coroner stated. Ms. Caddick’s husband, children, parents, and brother must be desperate for closure. Melissa Caddick was a married woman, mother, daughter, and sister. “Her disappearance from her family in traumatic circumstances must be a source of deep and ongoing sadness for them.”
