The sheriff’s office stated O’Neill had become trapped beneath “two huge blocks of ice” in an update on Tuesday afternoon. Officials added that she pulled her fellow climber out of the path before becoming caught by the ice column, which “probably saved her life.” The friend, a 21-year-old woman, was able to drive to cell reception and dial 911 after jumping down and doing so.
The sheriff’s office expressed its condolences to everyone affected by the tragedy as well as to the family of the heroic woman who died trying to save another. When grieving the loss of a loved one, “we hope that everyone may find comfort and that all the warm support will prevail over your hearts.”A medical helicopter was used to transport the 24-year-old male climber who fell 40 feet to urgent care. It was still unclear what his status was as of Tuesday.
Who was Meg O’Neill?
Meg O’Neill built her entire life around serving, which Camille Fiducia described as “really beautiful.” At Embark Outdoors, a company that encourages young women via sports programs, Fiducia collaborated with O’Neill. Meg has a very strong outdoor background. A really active outdoor enthusiast who climbs frequently in the Wasatch,” she remarked. O’Neill was referred to by Fiducia as her partner in crime and “the heart and soul” of the program. Previously, O’Neill worked as a science teacher at Utah International Charter School. Together with Fiducia, she had the same goal of “making the outdoors a more welcoming place for underrepresented populations.”
She didn’t seek out a position where she could earn $200,000 a year. She sought work that would be fulfilling because those are sometimes the jobs that are unappreciated, she said.
The nonprofit’s current priority, according to Fiducia, is creating a space where the girls may absorb their grief before finally moving through with a memorial or homage.
Right Fork Road currently has a floral tribute in her honor. What a revolution our neighborhood could experience if we were all even one-eighth as selfless as Meg, she exclaimed.
