Matthew James Cox was arrested after walking into a Brisbane police station on Thursday and allegedly telling police his wife and 11-week-old daughter were dead at the property hundreds of miles away in Rockhampton.Cox, 31, did not appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court when the matter of him was briefly mentioned on Friday. There was no history of domestic violence in the relationship and Cox and his wife were not known to police, Detective Superintendent Darrin Shadlow said Thursday. Officers discovered the bodies in a “quite confrontational” scene on the property and were not looking for anyone. more related to deaths, he said.Asked if this was a mental health related incident, Shadlow said it will “obviously form part of our investigations.”Shadlow dismissed reports that a shot had been heard from the address, but would not comment on how the mother and baby died, other than to say that police were met with “quite a contentious scene”.“A deceased young child always faces first responders,” he said. Cause of death of Tayla Cox and baby Murphy remain unclear
Cox’s family provided the following statement to 9News on Thursday night.
“The family is devastated by the news today that we have not only lost a beautiful daughter-in-law, Tayla, but also our much loved granddaughter Murphy,” said parents Denis Cox and Linda Lind.”At this stage, we have very few details and we are in utter shock.”We ask the media to respect our privacy as we grieve and try to process what happened.” The police will remain on the spot for days.Cox’s vehicle was seized at the Rockhampton airport for forensic examination.”We currently have scientific and forensic officers on the scene … they will be there for some time examining the scene and the investigations will continue,” Shadlow said.A crime scene was also established at an apartment in Fortitude Valley where police believe Cox was staying.Cox is a TV account manager at Southern Cross Austereo, and Tayla was on maternity leave.The couple welcomed their son Murphy Margaret in June.Neighbors were shocked by the incident.”I feel sick to my stomach. They are one of your lovely generic families,” said a neighbor.
