Mark Jones, 20, accused of murdering his friend claims he stabbed him in the chest in self-defense, a court has heard.
Mark Jones said he was forced to point a knife at Kyle Walley, 19, to “get him away from me” after he attacked him with the blade. Jones, who denies the murder, told a jury that Walley had tried to “cut him out.” Jones posted a video shot just before and after the attack on the Snapchat social media platform. Events unfolded in July 2021 when Mr. Jones, from Chester Road, Wrexham, went to Mr. Walley’s apartment in Rhosymedre, County Wrexham, to watch the Euro 2020 football final.

Jones posted a video shot just before and after the attack
Both had been drinking cider, Jones said. Mold Crown Court heard Mr. Walley make cutting movements as he approached Mr. Jones. Jones said he pointed the knife at his friend and told the court, “I’m not going to get stabbed by anybody.” He added: “He [Mr. Walley] came towards me and I grabbed the knife… I hit him in the chest.” He denied injuring Mr. Walley’s clavicle.
The court was previously told that Mr. Jones posted a video shot just before and after the attack on the Snapchat social media platform. Andrew Ford KC, defending, asked if the video showing Mr. Walley clutching his chest had been taken after the incident. Mr. Jones agreed that Somehow I recorded it on Snapchat, I don’t know why I did it, it was stupid,” Jones said. Mr. Ford asked about pictures on the site showing him kicking Mr. Walley as he lay on the living room floor.
Mr Jones said: “I could see him swaying for me, he was seeing things… he was scared.” He said he was supposed to take “medication”, including antipsychotic medication in the morning, but he had been taking it at night and said the “voices” had returned. Jones told the court that he felt “horrible” about the attack. It’s not funny that someone is lying on the floor dead, it’s horrible,” he said. “It was on my Snapchat story.”
Spent a lot of time on Snapchat
He told the court that he spent a lot of time on Snapchat and that he would post during the day. Jones said he did not comment in two interviews with police because his head “was bewildered” and he needed his medication. He hadn’t meant to seriously harm Mr. Walley, he said, but he wanted “to get him away from me.” Jones, who has prior convictions for assault and possession of knives, denied being fascinated by knives. John Philpotts, prosecution, asked why he called Mr. Walley “a fool” as he kicked him to the ground.
“He was a sexual offender, but I didn’t stab him for that,” Jones said, saying he kicked him because he was “psychotic.” ones insisted that he only stabbed Walley once. The police probably stabbed him the other time,” he said. He said he had not told police that Walley had drawn a knife on him when they arrested him because he “was really drunk.” He denied posting videos on Snapchat because he was proud of what happened and claimed that the threats found on Walley’s phone ended up there in another way. Mr. Philpotts told Mr. Jones that it was not a matter of self-defense and stabbed Mr. Walley twice as he intended. The case continues.
