A British base jumper has died after falling from an Italian high peak. On Saturday, Mark Andrews lost his left leg after falling more than 400 meters down a rock face in Trentino, Italy. According to the MailOnline, the 65-year-old was originally from Redruth in Cornwall but had been residing in Bucharest, Romania, with his wife. He was an adrenaline junkie and a skilled base jumper who was killed instantaneously while at a popular jumping area in the Italian Dolomites. Mr. Andrews was wearing his wingsuit at the time, and it’s believed he was carrying a parachute, though it’s unknown if he was able to deploy it. The circumstances behind the unfortunate fall are still being investigated by police.

Mark Andrews dies in Italy after a 400-meter mountain fall while wearing a wingsuit
The English-born man had ventured to the site on his own, but it was another base jumper who rang the emergency services after witnessing the incident. According to Italian media reports, another British base jumper died at the exact same spot on the same day last year. Mr. Andrews was a retired engineer and thought to have been a latecomer to the sport, but completed nearly 600 jumps before his death. A mountain rescue helicopter was brought in to recover his body and he was later flown to a nearby hospital to await repatriation. “He came to base jumping quite late,” a base jumper who knew Mark stated.
He’s only been at it since 2014, but he’s accomplished a lot in that time. “He was courageous and will be missed.” He was a fixture at several base-jumping contests in Italy, but he had also base-jumped over bridges and skyscrapers all around the world. “He lived in Moscow for a while and was a drilling engineer, but then he moved to Bucharest, where his wife is from.” “The area where the accident occurred is one of the most dangerous, and it’s considered only for experts because it’s quite tricky,” said another. It’s not a simple descent; there are rock and tree ledges for the first 400 meters before it hits a 1500-meter straight down.” “You also have to be careful with the wind, which is why only experienced professionals jump from that point, with others heading to Mt Brenta, which is about 30 kilometers away.” According to the foreign office, “We are in contact with local police following the death of a British man in Italy and are supporting his family.”
