Luke Bennett Wiki – Luke Bennett Biography

Luke Bennett, a talented young footballer electrocuted while playing with his friends would ‘likely have lived’ if paramedics had not been dispatched to the wrong place, an inquest heard.

Medics waited 23 minutes to reach Luke Bennett, 17, when friends called 911 after a pole he was holding came into contact with an overhead electrical line, shocking the kid with 11,000 volts. A 999 call taker told witnesses not to approach him as he lay dying in case they were electrocuted as well. Dr. Ian Schofield, a consultant cardiologist, believes he could have been rescued if CPR had been provided up to 10 minutes after the shock. ‘It is more likely than not that he would have survived if CPR had been started sooner,’ he continued.

“And if there had been a defibrillator available and used within the first 10 minutes, it’s very likely that he would have survived.” Luke was one of three teens struck by 11,000 volts after a metal pole they were playing with touched overhead power lines. The other two, Lewis Geszke and Ben Wilcox were knocked unconscious but recovered soon after. The three boys had been playing football with others after going through a hole in the fence of the Euxton Villa ground on Runshaw Hall Lane, Chorley, in March 2021.

They picked up a metal pole they had found at the side of the pitch and were pulling it up when there was a flash, the investigation heard. Eyewitness Ben Doherty said that the three had been trying to stop the pole on its end. Suddenly there were “cracklings and sparks” and all three collapsed shakily to the ground, he said. George Cooper said he had been playing soccer 50 meters from the children when he heard a “buzzing noise” and saw flames at the top of the post.

Sam Waddington added that when he ran towards the three, Lewis was starting to recover, but he couldn’t get a response from Luke. Luke initially rose to his feet after the commotion, but his horrified friends watched as he collapsed to the ground. Lewis and Ben were unconscious for a brief period before waking up to see CPR being performed on Luke. Despite the best efforts of paramedics and a doctor, Luke’s heart “went to a complete stop” and he was pronounced dead around 6:48 p.m.

Ambulance service call records showed a 999 call was received at 5:58 p.m. of one of the children on the soccer field. But the first paramedics only arrived on the scene 23 minutes later at 6:21 p.m. The ambulance crew was told the location was a field next to Runshaw College. After valuable minutes were wasted searching that area, they finally diverted to the actual address, the court was told. At the scene, the teen had been told by the call operator that he had called 999 and that Luke was not to be touched to avoid further casualties.

And because the handler thought the boy said Euxton, not Euxton Villa, a defibrillator at the club was not identified in ambulance service records. When ambulance crews and a flying medic finally arrived, they replaced a police officer who had already started CPR. But despite desperate efforts to revive Luke, he was pronounced dead at 6:48 p.m. 50 minutes after the 999 call was made. ER doctor Matthew Spence said at the inquest that he too was directed to the wrong site before being redirected to Euxton Villa. He said that when he checked on Luke he had no pulse. He said the team did everything it could, but he couldn’t revive him.

Tributes

In a heartbreaking tribute issued after his death, Luke’s family expressed “inconsolable” grief, saying “her beautiful light from him will never go out.” Speaking during the investigation of his son, Luke’s devastated father, Thomas, praised his son as “the life and soul of the party” with an “infectious personality”. he was very much life and soul. “His personality of his was quite contagious. He was very outgoing and was riding his bike earlier than he was supposed to. He just went on with things.

Mr. Bennett described how, even though he started playing soccer at the age of 13, Luke immediately showed promise and also excelled in other sports, including tennis, trampoline, and swimming. “It was amazing how he could do something without any real practice, he was that kind of guy. “He seemed to excel in almost every sport. He played for Blackburn for a while, then moved to Burnley and also to Preston. He would always ask us to take him to a friend’s house or to play football somewhere in Buckshaw or Euxton. I said I would take it and pick it up. I left it on the way, which I have done dozens of times. The coroner asked Bennett how he and his wife, along with Luke’s older brother, Dylan, have been doing since his death. ‘Day by day’, he replied as he began to cry. It has not been easy.

Luke’s club, AFC Fylde, released an emotional statement after the teen’s death at the time. “Luke was a friendly and popular young man who was well-liked by his teammates and coaches,” the club said. “He was someone who could instantly light up a room with his bubbly personality. Then, on the pitch, he was a naturally gifted footballer who excelled every time he represented AFC Fylde. “The sorrow of Luke’s sudden and untimely passing will be felt by our football club, the supporters, and everyone who ever had the pleasure of knowing him. Rest in peace, ‘Lukey B’. Your memory will always be in our hearts.’ The inquest is set to conclude today.
