Killer of Met police officer Sgt Matt Ratana given whole-life sentence
He said: “He acted in cold blood. He intended to kill Sergeant Ratana. He pointed the gun at his chest almost point blank.” “Even as he was going down, you re-aimed and fired a second shot at him. Aggravating factors outweigh mitigating factors.” De Zoysa becomes the 65th person to be jailed in England and Wales under a life order. He will serve his sentence in Belmarsh prison. During a three-week trial, jury were shown video footage of the New Zealand-born sergeant being hit by the first of three shots from De Zoysa. A second bullet hit him in the thigh before De Zoysa was thrown to the ground by other officers. Sergeant Ratana, known as Matt, died of his injuries at the hospital. His partner Su Bushy said the trial “has taken its toll.” She said: “I hope one day it will be easier, but for now the nightmare continues. “Right now I can’t forgive him for what he’s done.
