Rapper and online influencer Lil Tay has died at the age of 14, five years after the controversial social media star, whose real name was Claire Hope, rose to fame online. The news of her “sudden and tragic” death was confirmed by an unidentified family member in a statement shared on the teen’s Instagram account today when it was revealed that her brother had also died. “It is with a heavy heart that we share the devastating news of the sudden and tragic passing of our beloved Claire,” the post began, without disclosing the cause of death. “We have no words to express the unbearable loss and the indescribable pain.”

Lil Tay, originally from Canada but relocated to Los Angeles, gained viral fame on YouTube and social media after she started posting videos in 2017 when she was just nine years old. Controversial videos of her showed her swearing, insulting people, flaunting piles of cash, and even starting fights. But despite the criticism, Lil Tay quickly amassed more than 3.3 million followers on Instagram alone. However, she has been conspicuously absent from social media for the past five years and her last post on the platform was in honor of rapper XXXTentacion following her death in 2018.
