Liam Pakonis, 16, and Christian Enrico, 17, the driver and passenger, were both declared dead at the scene of the crash in Butternuts, New York, according to authorities.

According to CBS News, the high school juniors from Wayne, New Jersey were traveling to a cabin in upstate New York to meet Enrico’s brother, Aaron Hensz, for a spring break trip with intentions to go off-roading and fishing. According to Hensz, Enrico called his brother the night of the accident to let him know he was running “like a half hour late” after missing a turn. He explained, “He just never showed up.”

According to the police report, the incident happened at about 9:40 p.m. Their car was “traveling north on State Route 8 in the Town of Guilford when a Chenango County Sheriff’s Deputy attempted a traffic stop,” the statement stated. Enrico is accused of not stopping and moving on toward the Otsego County town of Butternuts. According to CBS News, they were traveling down a “wet and foggy road” when Enrico went off the road and smashed into “several trees,” according to the authorities.

Mayor Christopher Vergano said to NorthJersey.com regarding the incident, “There are no words to express to their family and friends in this difficult time to make this situation better.” I believe it’s crucial for the neighborhood to unite in honor of these young guys.

Tributes

According to TapIntoWayne, Wayne Hills High School Principal Mike Rewick informed the school through email of the boys’ passing. He wrote, “I am sorry to deliver this awful news: this past weekend, an automobile tragedy claimed the lives of two of our Wayne Hills junior class kids. “We are all in disarray.” Students can now access resources for grief counseling, according to the outlet.

An obituary describes Enrico as “a kind and loving son who always made his parents proud,” and adds that he loved video games, cars, the great outdoors, and jiu-jitsu.

Fran Ritter, a councilwoman for Wayne’s 5th Ward, expressed her “profound sadness” at the incident in a statement on Facebook, noting that both of the students were her children’s classmates. She also noted that Liam was a teammate of her son’s on the Wayne Hills Swim Team.

An English instructor for the eleventh grade described Enrico as a “bright light” and a “delight” to be around in an online memorial where friends and family can post memories and tributes.

A friend’s parents talked about his tight bond with their daughter. They stated, “Christian is a beautiful soul who shared a deep loving friendship with my daughter over the last five or more years.” They would converse virtually every day, occasionally dozing off during calls that they would pick up later.

Enrico’s funeral will be held in Fairfield on Thursday.

According to the Office of the New York State Attorney General, a “preliminary assessment” of the incident is now being done.
