Lesly Jacobombaire Mucutuy, Soleiny, Tien Noriel, and Cristin, Four Indigenous children who had been missing for 40 days after their little plane crashed in the Amazon jungle were discovered on Friday.
“They themselves are an example of survival that will go down in history,” said Colombia’s president, Gustavo Petro, at a news conference. “Today, those children are the children of peace and of Colombia.”It wasn’t immediately obvious whether the youngsters, aged 11 months to 13 years, were in excellent health, and Petro said it would take some time for specialists to determine that.

Four youngsters, including a baby, were discovered 40 days after their plane crashed in the Amazon jungle
Lesly Jacobombaire Mucutuy, 13, Soleiny Jacobombaire Mucutuy, 9, Tien Noriel Ronoque Mucutuy, 4, and Cristin Neriman Ranoque Mucutuy, 11 months, are members of the Uitoto Indigenous community. The plane’s lone engine failed, and it crashed on May 1 in the Colombian forest, its nose-first wreckage discovered more than two weeks later. Officials stated three dead, all adults, including the children’s mother, were discovered at the scene.
But the four weren’t there.
Authorities had hoped they might be found alive after footprints believed to belong to one of the four were discovered in late May. Colombian authorities continued to search for the children using tracking dogs on the ground.
Petro attributed the remarkable discovery to the country’s military as well as representatives of Indigenous communities. “The work between the armed forces and Indigenous communities — who obviously know the jungle better than we do — that work was successful,” he said. “The children were discovered by indigenous communities and the military.”
