Len Goodman, the long-serving head judge on Strictly Come Dancing, died only days before his 79th birthday, according to his representative. His agent, Jackie Gill, told Sky News the dancer and choreographer died on Saturday night in a hospice in Kent, surrounded by his family.
He had been diagnosed with bone cancer. In a statement, she said: “It is with great sadness to announce that Len Goodman has passed away peacefully, aged 78. “A much-loved husband, father, and grandfather who will be missed by family, friends, and all who knew him.”
Known for his warm humor and passion for Latin music and ballroom dancing, Goodman was the main judge on the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing from its launch in 2004 until 2016. His scoring call of “seven!” became his catchphrase, cementing his popularity among Strictly fans.
His last appearance was in the 2016 Christmas Day special, after which Shirley Ballas replaced him as head judge. He also appeared on the US version of the show, Dancing With The Stars, from 2005 until his departure last year. He said at the time that he wanted to “spend more time with my grandchildren and my family” in the UK.

Paying tribute, Strictly host Claudia Winkleman wrote on Twitter: “So sad for Len. He was one of a kind, a brilliant and kind man. Full of sparkle, warmth, and wit. Sending all his love to his family and friends ”
Strict judge Craig Revel Horwood described Goodman as a “beautiful colleague and dear friend” and wrote: “I have just woken up to the sad news that my beautiful colleague and dear friend Len Goodman has passed away. My heart and love go out to his lovely Sue and her family. “Len Goody Goodman is what I’ve always called him and ‘It’s a ten from Len & seveeeeeern’ will live with me forever. RIP Len.”
Strict judge Bruno Tonioli wrote on Instagram: “With a broken heart my dear friend and partner of 19 years the only ballroom legend #lengoodman passed away. “I will cherish the memory of our amazing adventures and the hundreds of shows we did together @bbcstrictly @dancingwiththestars. There will never be anyone like you. We will miss you.”
BBC Director General Tim Davie also paid tribute, crediting Goodman for his breakout role in the hit Strictly. He said in a statement: “Len Goodman was a wonderful and warm artist who was adored by millions. He appealed to all ages and felt like a member of everyone’s family. “Len was at the heart of Strictly’s success. He will be greatly missed by the public and his many friends and family.”

Career
Born in Bethnal Green in London’s East End in April 1944, Goodman began his career selling fruit and vegetables in his grandfather’s shop. he put on the market before training as a welder’s apprentice on the London docks.
Training to become a soccer player, a foot injury led him to take up dance at the age of 19 on the recommendation of his doctor. He went on to win several competitions, including the British Championship in Blackpool when he was in his early 20s.
Goodman received the Carl Alan Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to dance. He’s also hosted several BBC documentaries, a foodie travelogue with chef Ainsley Harriott, a Partners In Rhyme family quiz (based on the Obama Llama board game), and in 2021 he even had a voice cameo in Hollyoaks. Away from his television career, he was also the owner of Goodman Academy, a dance school in Dartford, Kent, which has been in operation for over 50 years.
Outside of dance, Goodman was a music enthusiast and regularly filled in for the late Paul O’Grady when he was away for his BBC Radio 2 show. Also a sports lover, Goodman supported West Ham United and was a huge fan of cricket. Goodman leaves behind a son, James, and his wife, dance teacher Sue Barrett.
