Lauren Anne Dickason, 42, was charged with murdering her daughters, Liané, 6, and two-year-old twins Maya and Karla, at the family home in Timaru, on New Zealand’s South Island, on 16 September 2021.
Dickason has admitted to killing her children, but she denies it was murder and has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity while she stands trial in Christchurch High Court. The court heard on Thursday that her father, Graham Dickason, was one of the first people to witness the horrific aftermath of the tragedy, the New Zealand Herald reported. Colleague Mark Cvitanich along with his wife Cathy Cvitanich were also at the scene. “I heard Graham howl, it was horrible,” Cvitanich said. ‘He had his coat over his head, his hands on his head… He said ‘they’re dead’ and mentioned cable ties… ‘He mentioned ‘she’s crazy’ and that he couldn’t believe she killed them and he had been married to her for 15 years. “He said she suffered from depression and anxiety…

I think he meant that by bringing them here, he thought she was overwhelmed,” he said, referring to the family’s recent move from South Africa. The court also heard from a school mother who spoke to Dickason just hours before she killed her three young children, noting that she “seemed like she was having a hard time.” Laetitia Smit said that around 8:20 a.m. on the day of the murders, she was dropping off her own daughter when the director asked to speak to the Dickasons because “they have just arrived in the country and may need support.”

Husband made desperate bid to revive smothered girls
Graham seemed so excited to be here,’ Smit said in a statement read in court this afternoon. She then said to Mrs. Smit: ‘Can I ask you something? Can he just support my wife? Particularly difficult was a two-week period spent in Covid isolation with Dickason sending a series of alarming text messages to a friend. He messaged a friend about spending two weeks in isolation with her family after arriving in New Zealand from South Africa during the Covid pandemic. “God knows we could probably commit murder in that little room and those two weeks,” Dickason said. In another message, he told a friend that a Netflix show he was watching was “very good, otherwise I’m just trying not to murder the twins.” He complained that one of her daughters “moans all the time” before referring to strangling her. “I feel like my fuse is so short… I want to blow up over the smallest things,” he said in a text message. “I always want to slap mine but Graham stops me.” The trial continues.
