Laura Ann Carleton, 66, an American store owner was shot dead after a dispute over a Pride flag displayed outside her business, police say.
On Friday, Laura Ann Carleton, 66, was found with a gunshot wound at Ella Mag Pi’s store in Cedar Glen, California. A suspect, who fled the scene on foot, was killed by police when she found him nearby, allegedly still armed. Carleton was described as a “wonderful friend” by Hollywood director Paul Feig, who posted a picture of them together. The suspect made “derogatory comments” about the rainbow flag before shooting the victim, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies then located the suspect, armed with a handgun, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department-Coroner’s Department said. At this point, “an encounter of deadly force occurred and the suspect was pronounced dead.” Feig, known for movies like Bridesmaids and the TV series Freaks and Geeks, said he shot his friend after confronting the suspect about tearing down the flag.

In an Instagram post, he said he was “devastated” for Ms. Carleton’s family and the LGBTQ+ community, “to whom Lauri was a true ally.” “This intolerance has to end,” he wrote. “Anyone who uses hate speech against the LGBTQ+ community needs to realize that their words matter, that their words can inspire violence against innocent people they love.” Local Lake Arrowhead LGBT group said the incident marked a “very sad day” for the area and that Ms. Carleton, a “friend, and supporter”, would be “truly missed”. She was “killed defending her LGBTQ+ Pride flags in front of her store,” the group wrote in their own Instagram post. “Lauri did not identify as LGBTQ+, but he dedicated his time to helping and advocating for everyone in the community.”
