Lance Blanks, 56, a former Texas standout guard who also served as general manager of the Phoenix Suns, has died. Blanks died on Wednesday in Dallas, according to the NBA. The reason for death was not disclosed.

According to Reuters, Blanks was a scout for the Los Angeles Clippers and was on assignment at the time of his death.’Lance was a light for all who knew him,’ said NBA executive vice president Joe Dumars, who played on the Detroit Pistons with Blanks in the early 1990s.

‘It’s been an honor to name him one of my closest friends. I’ll be eternally thankful to him for all of his help throughout the years.’His legacy will be carried on not only by his family but by all those whose lives he improved. Brother, you will be sorely missed.’

‘Just a heartbreaking bit of news,’ said Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr. He will be greatly missed. ‘It’s a bad day.’ We are very grieved by the passing of Lance Blanks,’ the Suns stated in a statement. He adored basketball and made contributions to it as a player, executive, coach, and broadcaster.

‘As Suns general manager, we got to see his enthusiasm for the game personally.’ Aside from basketball, Lance was a loving father to his two girls and a cherished friend to many. ‘We express our heartfelt sympathies to his family and friends during this difficult time. He will be sorely missed.’ Blanks began his undergraduate career at Virginia in 1985 before transferring to Texas, where he had back-to-back outstanding seasons. His 1,322 points are the most ever scored by a two-year player in program history.

Career

During the 1988-89 season, Blanks averaged 19.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 3.3 steals. The following season, he averaged 20.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.7 steals while helping the Longhorns reach the NCAA Tournament’s Elite Eight. Arkansas defeated Texas in the finals. Blanks hit 78 three-pointers in each of those seasons.

In 2007, Blanks was inducted into the Texas Longhorns Hall of Fame. The Pistons selected Blanks in the first round (26th overall) of the 1990 draft. In the NBA, he averaged 2.0 points and 0.8 assists in 142 career games (two starts) with the Pistons (1990-92) and Minnesota Timberwolves (1993).

Blanks served in the front offices of the San Antonio Spurs and the Cleveland Cavaliers following his playing career until becoming general manager of the Suns in 2010. He was sacked after three seasons in Phoenix when he finished last in the Western Conference with a 25-57 record in his final season. He would eventually work as a basketball analyst in broadcasting.
