Other distraught witnesses said the girl was with a friend when she was struck and that other passengers on the tram had tried to help her. Footage from the scene showed distraught passengers being comforted and escorted away by emergency services. NSW Fire and Rescue Superintendent Adam Dewberry described the incident as a “difficult and tragic situation” for the firefighters who responded to the scene. Upon arrival, paramedics were on the scene evaluating and treating the victim who was trapped under this light rail car. Unfortunately, nothing could be done, ”he told reporters. Fire and police rescue teams under the direction of tram engineers used hydraulic lifting cylinders and high-pressure airbags to lift the 10-tonne carriage and remove the 16-year-old’s body.
Superintendent Dewberry could not comment on how the teenager became trapped under the tram while police were still investigating. The 52-year-old tram driver was taken to hospital for mandatory tests. Police cordoned off the surroundings to establish a crime scene and investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident. The team has since been removed from the scene while the police investigation into the tragedy continues.
