Kyra Dulguime, a 16-year-old girl who died after being dragged under a tram in Sydney for more than 200 meters has been identified, with heartbroken friends paying tribute to her ‘beautiful angel’.
Kyra Dulguime died shortly after falling into a gap between two light rail carriages on the George Street platform in the city’s CBD at midnight on Wednesday night. Emergency crews desperately tried to save the severely injured 16-year-old, but despite fighting for two hours, she died on the spot. On Thursday, devastated friends of hers placed messages and flowers near the site of the teen’s death. Clearly moved, they were seen hugging each other and lighting candles in memory of Kyra as the passengers passed by. A message posted on Facebook read: “I love and will miss you our beautiful angel, Kyra Dulguime.” I just can’t believe you’re gone. Rest in peace in the arms of our Lord and may perpetual light shine on you.’
Witnesses told Daily Mail Australia that the girl had tried to cross the tracks between two carriages when the tram stopped at a red light near the light rail stop in Chinatown. When the tram suddenly began to move, she was pinned under one of the carriages and was swept across the road before the driver could stop.
Mohammed Aqil Abdulla, 29, was working the night shift at the TSG tobacco station near the Chinatown stop when he heard terrifying screams. The tram dragged her from the traffic lights to the next platform, about 200 meters,” he told Daily Mail Australia. She was trapped between the compartments. Abdulla said that he had heard that the girl had tried to cross between carriages when the tram was stopped at traffic lights. She wanted to jump from the other side, but suddenly the light changed and she was caught in the middle,” he said. The driver would not have seen her. Witnesses yelled “Help her! Other distraught witnesses said the girl was with a friend when she was struck and that other passengers on the tram had tried to help her. Footage from the scene showed distraught passengers being comforted and escorted away by emergency services. NSW Fire and Rescue Superintendent Adam Dewberry described the incident as a “difficult and tragic situation” for the firefighters who responded to the scene. Upon arrival, paramedics were on the scene evaluating and treating the victim who was trapped under this light rail car. Unfortunately, nothing could be done, ”he told reporters. Fire and police rescue teams under the direction of tram engineers used hydraulic lifting cylinders and high-pressure airbags to lift the 10-tonne carriage and remove the 16-year-old’s body.
Superintendent Dewberry could not comment on how the teenager became trapped under the tram while police were still investigating. The 52-year-old tram driver was taken to hospital for mandatory tests. Police cordoned off the surroundings to establish a crime scene and investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident. The team has since been removed from the scene while the police investigation into the tragedy continues.
