American professional freestyle skier and former world champion Kyle Smaine died after being trapped in an avalanche in Japan on Sunday, his newlywed wife confirmed. Dear husband and my entire world, we are officially married on November 18, 2022, something not many people knew about,” Smaine’s wife, snowboarder Jenna Dramise, wrote on Facebook on Monday. “I am incredibly grateful to be able to marry you and have you in my life. You loved skiing more than anyone I’ve ever met.

The 31-year-old professional skier from Lake Tahoe, California, was one of five foreign nationals from the US and Austria who were swept away by the avalanche while cross-country skiing in central Nagano Prefecture, Japan, around 2 a.m. :30 pm local time on Sunday.

Shortly before his death, Smaine shared a video on Instagram showing him skiing during a marketing trip to Japan. He wrote in the attached caption: “This is what brings me back to Japan every winter. Incredible snow quality, continuous storms and some really fun terrain that seems to get better the more you explore.”

The deadly avalanche took place on the eastern slope of Mount Hakuba, Nagano police said. Smaine and four other men were skiing in two separate groups on the mountain, which is 8,100 feet high. The other three skiers made it down the mountain on their own after the avalanche, but Smaine and another man were discovered Monday without vital signs.

Japanese meteorological authorities issued an avalanche warning for the area, following heavy snowfall in recent days. Professional skier Adam Ü, who was skiing with Smaine on Sunday, told the Mountain Gazette magazine that they had just finished a run when a third skier in his group caused the avalanche.

“We saw it coming,” Ü told the outlet. “We listen to crack. We realized that it is big. We started running and then they beat us.” Ü was dug out from under nearly five feet of snow by rescuers, but Smaine and another skier, whose name has not been identified but said to be an Austrian citizen, were not so lucky. The outlet reported that Smaine was thrown more than 164 feet into the air and died, while the other victim died of internal injuries.

Career

During his 10-year career as a competitive skier, Smaine won a gold medal in the halfpipe at the FIS Freestyle World Ski and Snowboard Championships in 2015. He retired from competition in 2018. The USA Freeski Team mourned Smaine’s death on Instagram, writing: “Lost an amazing person, friend, skier and teammate in the mountains today. Smaine is survived by his wife Jenna. She wrote that she first met her husband in 2010 when she picked him up while hitchhiking in New Zealand. She described their 13 years together as “the best fucking years of my life.”

“I know you had the best races of your life in Japan and I could never blame you for doing what you loved,” added the young widow. “I wish I could tell you that secret I always had, that I loved you. It was never really a secret because I told you at least 10 times a day. I can’t wait to see you again.”
