Kulwinder Virdee, 51, a married dentist who was accused of being a sex pest was suspended for 18 months after he targeted a teenage dental nurse just weeks after she started working at his practice.
Father-of-two Kulwinder Virdee is accused of telling the 19-year-old that he had a “sex addiction” that made him feel “horny all day.” Over a three-month period, he is accused of inappropriate touching, making lewd comments, and bombarding the trainee with WhatsApp messages after work. Following the woman’s complaint, other female employees spoke up, and the matter was reported to the General Dental Council. Mr. Virdee, one of three partners at the firm, is accused of touching the complainant on several occasions, including stroking her thigh while she sat alongside him and attempting to place his hand on her private parts.
After allegedly being harassed for weeks, the trainee secretly taped one chat while the two were alone in the staff room at Bispham Dental Practise in Blackpool, Lancashire. Virdee made a number of sexually explicit comments on a recording that was played at a disciplinary hearing. Can’t a guy sit there simply admiring the view?’ he said. Lancaster dentist fired after allegations of unwanted sexual behavior
Virdee wrote 27 WhatsApp messages and made seven phone calls to the complainant between November 30 and February 23 this year, including one at 11:37 p.m. on January 26, 2023. He also made four phone calls between 4.16 pm and 8.51 pm on another occasion. According to the testimony during the hearing, the complainant reacted to the messages requesting him to stop. Mr Virdee had worked for the private practice for 23 years, with dentist partners Robin Caro and Mark Collinson. The hearing was told that they had nine employees, all of whom were female. When his partners were made aware of the concerns in February, they hired an outside human resources consulting firm to investigate.
Other employees claimed they had witnessed Mr. Virdee make inappropriate sexual comments and that he had a “history of inappropriate behavior in the workplace.” One trainee dental nurse said he slapped her thighs,’ while another saw him ‘rubbing and gyrating’ against a staff member. ‘Twenty-one years I have worked here and 21 years it has been going on,’ claimed a colleague quoted in the judgment who has worked at the practice for more than two decades. You can’t talk to young girls like that, I’ve said. ‘He’d answer, ‘I know, I’m vile.’ Mr. Virdee is also accused of discussing sexual topics such as dogging, cottaging, and prostitution’ in front of colleagues at the practice during working hours.
He is accused of sending obscene WhatsApp photographs to coworkers. Mr. Virdee vehemently denies inappropriately touching staff. He said the chat in the audio tape was ‘taken out of context,’ but acknowledged making sexual jokes or innuendo’ in the presence of his staff on occasion. Since the allegation was made public on February 6, he has not worked at the practice. The dentist, who goes by Kuli, told patients of his absence last month. After 23 years at Bispham, I am sad to say that due to circumstances beyond my control, I am unable to see you at this time,’ he said on the practice’s Facebook page. I know we’ve gotten to know each other well, and it’s difficult when you can’t see me.’ I am hoping to have some solution in place,’ he wrote, ‘but it may be some time before I can return.’
The Dental Professional Hearings Service committee issued an 18-month interim suspension order ‘for the protection of the public’ while the General Dental Council conducts an additional inquiry. According to the committee, allowing Mr. Virdee to continue practicing without restrictions would pose a “real risk of harm to the public.” The committee stated that it considered “the significant imbalance of power that would have existed between you as a dentist and partner at the practice and the complainant, a 19-year-old trainee dental nurse.” In six months, the suspension will be reviewed.
