Brayden Yates’ wife, Krystal Pitt, 24, died 10 days after giving birth to their second son, Toby, just over a fortnight ago. The couple had been lining up at the Noranda Post Office in Perth’s northern suburbs after visiting Toby in the neonatal intensive care unit at Perth Children’s Hospital when Pitt told Yates that he had chest pain. Within seconds, she realized that she was having a heart attack. “I had her sit up and then quite quickly she had a cardiac event,” Mr Yates, 28, told the West Australian. Mr. Yates called triple-0 before performing CPR and then installing a defibrillator in a desperate attempt to save his wife’s life before an ambulance arrived. Ms Pitt was then placed in an induced coma and, although her prognosis was initially positive, her health rapidly deteriorated before she died in hospital on Saturday. Ms Pitt, who had a pre-existing blood condition, is understood to have died from blood clots that had formed in her lungs and triggered cardiac arrest.

The couple, who are originally from York, had called her son Toby together in hospital before she passed away. “Obviously it was something special that we got to do it together and I’m grateful for that,” Yates said. Yates said baby Toby, who was born four weeks early, was progressing well and she hoped to have him home from the hospital soon. The couple also have a 14-month-old daughter named Aurora. The father-of-two said he wants the death of his partner to serve as a reminder for people to “cherish every moment” with his loved ones. “The super crazy thing, the day before, we were talking about how precious life was and you never know when your last day will be,” he said. Mr. Yates said he will be sure to tell his children “how amazing and loving” his mother was. “I have a lot of videos and photos that he took, especially during the first year of my daughter’s life, so I can always share them with her,” he said. Mr Yates said Ms Pitt was a ‘natural mother’ and enjoyed spending time with other mothers and sharing parenting advice. Mr. Yates’ family is raising funds for Ms. Pitts’ funeral through GoFundMe. “Any contributions made will go towards helping Brayden and the children with a service for her mother and the ongoing costs of raising the children,” GoFundMe organizers wrote on the page. “I would like to express my gratitude to everyone for their continued support during this difficult time.”
