Kevin Monahan, a homeowner in Hebron, New York, killed Kaylin Gillis after her vehicle stopped in his driveway Saturday night. “Through the preliminary investigation, it was learned that the vehicle the victim was in mistakenly pulled into the driveway at the Patterson Hill Road address,” the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said in a news statement, naming the homeowner as 65-year-old Kevin D. Monahan. Kaylin A. Gillis, the victim, was murdered after Monahan “fired at least two shots” at the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after officers arrived.
“Monahan refused to leave his home to speak with police and was uncooperative with the investigation.” He was later apprehended with the assistance of the New York State Police Special Operation Response Team after several hours,” the department said in a release, adding that he has been charged with second-degree murder. In a press conference on Monday, Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy stated that Gillis was riding in the vehicle with three other passengers seeking a friend’s residence when the event occurred.

“It’s a very rural area, there are dirt roads, there’s not a lot of cellular services or any type of internet,” Murphy explained, noting that the group had driven up Monahan’s driveway “in error.” According to the police investigation, the group drove away from the property after shots were fired and then dialed 911 when they arrived in the adjacent city of Salem. “This is a very sad case of some young adults who were looking for a friend’s house and ended up at this man’s house who decided to come out with a firearm and discharged,” Murphy said, adding that the department’s investigation is still in its early stages.
Monahan is being held at the Warren County Jail, according to Murphy, and will appear in court “shortly.” At this point, it is unknown whether Monahan has legal representation. Beth Palleschi and Nikki Thomas disclosed in the description of a GoFundMe account that started after the tragedy that Gillis had “just turned 20 years old” before she “lost her life in a tragic shooting.” The campaign has so far raised more than $31,000 of its $50,000 goal. Donations will be directed to the Gillis family and used to cover Kaylin’s funeral expenses as well as any immediate financial needs.
