Keith Kerinauia, 19, faced Darwin Local Court today on charges of fatally stabbing 20-year-old Declan Laverty, who worked at the BWS bottle shop in Jingili, north Darwin. The attack occurred after Kerinauia was allegedly denied service. Crown prosecutor Marty Aust revealed in court that Kerinauia was out on bail at the time of the alleged attack for an earlier alleged aggravated assault involving “a bladed weapon”. Aust said Kerinauia was due to plead guilty on April 13, but requested that that date be rescinded and moved to May 24 along with the new charges. Kerinauia’s attorney, Shane McMaster, declined to say whether his client would fight the charges. It’s very, very early, I won’t comment,” he told 9News after the procedure. Kerinauia is charged with eight counts, including multiple counts of aggravated assault, aggravated robbery, breach of adult bail, and murder related to Sunday night’s events.

Erinauia did not request bail and will instead spend the next nine weeks behind bars until the matter returns to court on May 24.
It comes as the community continues to grapple with the shocking death of Laverty, whom his father described on a local radio station as “a wonderful, stubborn, strong boy.” “He loved his football, and he was really into music at the moment. He was trying to put out some songs and also studying and working 30 hours a week at the BWS Airport (Tavern),” he said.
