Katrina Mahoney, a woman appeared in court charged with a drink driving collision on Christmas Eve that killed a great-grandfather. Katrina Mahoney, 33, appeared at Merthyr Tydfil Magistrates Court charged with causing death by driving without due care and attention over the alcohol limit. She was told in court that she intends to plead guilty in Merthyr Crown Court. Ron Fealey, 82, was allegedly struck by his car and died at the hospital from his injuries.

The case was adjourned to crown court on August 14. Mr Fealey was allegedly struck by his Nissan Qashqai on Avenue De Clichy in Merthyr on 24 December 2022. The court heard that he was found to have 73 micrograms of alcohol in 100 milliliters of breath. more than twice the legal limit. The prosecution dropped the charge of failing to report an accident because the deadline had expired. In a tribute published after his death, the retired nurse Fealey was described as “in a class of his; funny, smart and caring.” He was a “stalwart” of the Dowlais rugby club, where he was a member of the committee that would “always be respected and remembered”.
