Katrina Mahoney Wiki – Katrina Mahoney Biography

Katrina Mahoney, 34, got into her car to buy cigarettes when she knocked down Ron Fealey, 82, in Merthyr Tydfil on December 24 last year.

She couldn’t stop even though her windshield was broken. Bystanders tried to help Mr Fealey but he died on Boxing Day in hospital from a brain injury. Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court was told how Mahoney had her 15-year-old son in the car at the time of the accident. She took him home before going to the scene with a friend. She told police she had had a drink, but a breathalyzer test revealed she had more than twice the blood alcohol limit in her system. The court also heard how the registered nurse was driving at 40mph in a 20mph zone when she hit Mr Fealey. Fealey, a retired nurse and director of Dowlais RFC, was in a pub in Merthyr Tydfil on the night of the accident. Prosecutor Andrew Jones played CCTV footage of the collision, which took place at around 10pm. He said: “The defendant collided with Mr Fealey but did not stop his vehicle and instead returned to his house, leaving Mr Fealey bleeding and unconscious on the road. “At that time she had his 15-year-old son with her in the car.”

Bystanders who had witnessed the collision came to the victim’s aid and began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers. We had to wait for the ambulance to arrive, so firefighters from the nearby fire station came to help. Mahoney returned to the scene 10 minutes later with her friend, who is also a nurse, and spoke with officers. She said she would take Mr. Fealey to the trauma room where she worked. In a shocking statement made to the court, Fealey’s son said: “He was heartbroken. “He had no family with him all night and we couldn’t hold his hand or comfort him. “Imagine my horror when I found out that the person who did this was drunk, she was a registered nurse and she had her son in the car, when she left my father unconscious in the road. “He didn’t even call an ambulance.” Mahoney pleads guilty to causing death by reckless driving while impaired by driving under the influence. The judge sentenced her to 5 years in prison. She will serve at least half that time in custody before being released on licence.
