Kathleen Kirby died after a crash on Bolton Road in Wigan at around 2.30 pm on Monday, while police were pursuing a vehicle that “failed to stop” for officials.
The pursued vehicle is believed to have crashed into another vehicle, tragically striking Ms Kirby. She was rushed to hospital from the scene with serious injuries but sadly died a short time later. A man was arrested and taken into custody, police said. Kathleen’s family said she was a woman “who took everyone under her wing”, the Manchester Evening News reported. They said, “Our hearts are forever broken as today we lost our beloved mom, nana, sister, partner, aunt, and best friend to so many. She took everyone under her wing, she only saw the good in everyone.” Kathleen would be there no matter what and she was the rock of our family, she held everyone together with her strength and passion for her life. She will never be forgotten and we will all do her proud in everything we do. “I love you always and forever, Mom, nana, partner, and sister, always in our hearts.”
The incident has been referred to the Greater Manchester Police Professional Standards Branch and the Independent Office for Police Conduct. A GMP statement said: “Unfortunately, a woman has died following a traffic collision on Platt Bridge, Wigan. At around 2:30 p.m. today (Monday, June 26, 2023), officers began a brief pursuit following reports that a vehicle had failed to stop for police. A short time later, a collision involving to another vehicle, which was not involved in the police chase, hit a woman in her 60s. “The woman was taken to hospital for treatment of serious injuries but sadly died a short time later despite the best efforts of the emergency services and medical staff. A man was arrested in connection with the incident and remains in police custody. at the moment”. ”
