The victim, 52-year-old Tammy Bailey, lived with Fields on Bailey Drive in Blount County, but Sheriff Mark Moon said they had separate rooms. The couple had just celebrated her birthday, but when they got home from a trip on Oct. 21, Fields told police she went into her bedroom and stabbed her.
“He wanted to have sex with her,” Moon said. “He went to her room and propositioned her and she turned him down. According to her statement, that frustrated him. He said that he stabbed her once and then passed out.”
Moon said they believe he died after Friday night’s attack, but that was not the last attack on Bailey.
On Saturday, she went back there and felt like she was having a bad dream,” Moon said. “For some reason, he stabbed her multiple times again.”
Moon said Saturday night that Fields called her father and talked about doing something horrible. Moon said his father called the victim’s sister, who was also his neighbor. Bailey’s sister came over to check on her, but Fields wouldn’t let her in.
“The criminal grabbed her and wouldn’t let her into the house,” Moon said. “He told her that he had done something horrible and that he didn’t need to go in there.”
He then called the police.
“The offender tells you, on the body camera, that I’ve done something wrong, there’s evidence in the house, and if you go in, you’ll see it’s wrong,” Moon said.
They found Bailey’s body in her bedroom. Moon said that she was dead at the scene and that her body had also been dismembered. Moon said it was a frightening and disturbing scene.
“It was so bad,” Moon said. “There were more than 100 stab wounds, but there is no way of knowing how many.”
Fields is now being charged with murder and abuse of a corpse.
“We believe that the initial attack on her was the killing blow because she had a significant heart injury,” Moon said. “The extra, the multiple, the return the next day, that is the abuse of the corpse.”
Sheriff Moon says investigators returned to the home on Monday to collect final evidence and interviewed Fields again on Tuesday, Oct. 25. He is being held in jail until his bond hearing, but Moon said he may not be until the next one. week.
