Julianna Bransden life was turned upside down when she went to bed with flu-like symptoms, only to wake up from a coma 18 days later to find she needed both legs amputated.
Julianna Bransden “dedicated and popular” teacher had been “happy, healthy and busy” when she finished the school year on December 23. The 44-year-old enjoys walks by the sea with her husband Tim and her two children, William, 11, and Emilia, aged 14, near her Welsh home, she was “falling off the edge of a cliff” just days later.

Illness quickly turned into flu-like symptoms
She unexpectedly caught a cold during the holiday season, but on New Year’s Eve, her illness “quickly turned into flu-like symptoms,” according to her friends and family. Tim called paramedics for help after the incident, which he later described to ITV news as “really traumatic“, and was instructed to continue monitoring Ms Bransden at home as she gave him plenty of water.
Tim realized with astonishment after a while that his wife’s heart had abruptly stopped beating. Ms. Bransden, a talented pianist, was taken to hospital and placed on life support while she was extensively sedated. “Julianna deteriorated dramatically due to septic shock, suffered two cardiac arrests and multiple organ failure…” Her GoFundMe page reads: “A diagnosis of sepsis resulting from an aggressive form of pneumonia has been confirmed and we have been warned that she may not survive the night. ”
According to the family, a combination of invasive strep A and influenza caused pneumonia “resulting in a level of illness from which several experienced ICU nurses said they had never seen anyone recover before.” Doctors were overjoyed when Ms. Bransden woke up without any permanent brain damage after spending nearly three weeks on a ventilator.

Both of her legs had to be amputated
Both of her legs had to be amputated below the knee on February 16 because the acute illness severely damaged her hands and feet. She currently cannot use her arms and it is “probable” that she will lose most of her fingers.
“The focus now is to bring Julianna home and support her long-term rehabilitation and recovery,” the fundraiser reads. “As a double amputee with limited use of her hands, life for Julianna and her family has now taken a very different turn. Julianna will walk again with the use of prostheses, of that we have no doubt. She will also overcome challenges with her hands, adapting to find new ways to accomplish what she needs to do.” When the 44-year-old is freed from her own and settled into her “new normal,” funds raised through GoFundMe will also be used to refit the couple’s home for her.
