Joshua Delbono, a 19-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison for murder after his mother informed authorities that he had stabbed another teenager to death.
Joshua Delbono killed 16-year-old Charley Bates after a confrontation between two gangs in Radstock, Somerset. Delbono’s mother dialed 999 when he returned to his home in Frome, Bristol Crown Court heard. After a two-week trial, the jury found him guilty and sentenced him to at least 21 years in prison. Delbono admitted stabbing Charley but denied murder, claiming he was defending a buddy.
According to the court, when Delbono’s mother called the police, she said, “My son has killed someone.” He’s in my house now, and I can’t let him go.” Charley was stabbed to death in a parking park near the local library. The court heard that he was with a group of six people in the car park around 18.30 BST on the night in question when two cars arrived, one of which was driven by Delbono. According to the jury, there was a history of animosity between the victim and one of Delbono’s associates. An insult exchange between Charley and the defendant’s buddy quickly developed into a fight between the two groups.
The defendant then exited his vehicle, armed with a five-inch knife, and stabbed the victim multiple times, according to the jury. As Charley bled to death, Delbono said “Don’t mess with us again” as he and his pals fled the scene, according to witnesses. The entire episode took less than five minutes. Delbono drove to Shearwater Lake near Warminster in Wiltshire after the killing, where he threw away the knife and burnt some of his clothes. One of Delbono’s friends recorded the fire on their phone.

Radstock is a town on the border of the Mendip Hills, surrounded by lovely countryside, where one resident told me that “stabbings just don’t happen here.” Nine months later, the murder of 16-year-old Charlie Bates still stings this town, and the community is still in mourning for him.
Who was Charley Bates and why was Charley Bates stabbed to death?
Charley was a former Writhlington School student who had just done his GCSEs and was getting set to join college. He was well-liked and well-known, and he was frequently seen riding his moped down the main street. Hundreds gathered for Charley’s tribute on September 2, 2022, what would have been his 17th birthday. And three parking spaces in the car park behind the library where Charley died are still sealed off months later. The areas have been turned into a monument, with yellow flowers and flags, the teenager’s preferred color.
The police, schools, and youth services are still collaborating to reduce tensions and encourage young people not to carry blades. According to the court, Charley also brought a bag containing a knife and a BB pistol to the car park on the night of his death. Following the stabbing, one of his pals dumped it in adjacent woods, but cops found it. The jury heard Charley’s pals claim he was not armed throughout the altercation.
Chance meeting
Delbono originally refused to answer police questions but subsequently confessed to stabbing someone. In a prepared statement, he stated, “I thought my friend was being stabbed, so I reacted.”He stated that he was aware that the individual from whom he purchased his vehicle had left a knife inside it, but that he did not intend to cause serious injury to Charley. I didn’t realize he was in pain. It was a random meeting. “I’m heartbroken that Charley was killed; it was never my intention,” he said.
