Joshua Bowles, 29, allegedly stabbed the woman in the car park of the leisure center on Tommy Taylor’s Lane in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, around 9:15 p.m. m. of March 9.
Prosecutors say Bowles attacked the woman “believing she worked at GCHQ,” Britain’s signals intelligence and cybersecurity agency. Wearing a gray tracksuit, the bearded Bowles appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court today charged with attempted murder and assaulting Alex Fuentes when he intervened. He did not plead guilty. The woman is understood to have been seconded to GCHQ, which is just three miles away. The nature of her work has not been disclosed, but GCHQ has a strong relationship with its US counterpart, the National Security Agency.

Arrested for trying to kill an American spy by stabbing him to death
Kathryn Selby, the prosecutor, said: “This was a serious incident of attempted murder, this was a planned attack. The defendant investigated the victim and her whereabouts believing that she worked for GCHQ. She then she has traveled to the leisure center taking her two knives. He saw his victim enter the center and waited outside. When he came out of her with a friend of hers, he approached her and attacked her with a knife. We believe he selected the victim because she is a GCHQ worker and she has opinions about the work she believes they do there. He attacked her because in her mind she represents the state.”
Bowles allegedly punched Fuentes repeatedly when he tried to intervene. Bowles, of Welwyn Mews, Cheltenham, is charged with attempted murder and actual bodily harm. He was taken into custody ahead of a preliminary hearing at the Old Bailey on March 31.
Nick Price, head of the Crown Prosecution Service’s Special Crimes and Counter Terrorism Division, said: “The CPS has cleared Gloucestershire Police to charge Joshua Bowles with attempted murder. This charge relates to a woman who was stabbed to death outside a leisure center in Cheltenham on Thursday 9 March.”
Speaking after the incident, Deputy Chief Constable Richard Ocone, of Gloucestershire Police, said: “I would like to reassure those who live locally or visit the county that we believe this was an isolated incident and we are not aware of any broader threat. for members of the public. We are working closely with our partners in counter-terrorism policing. We appreciate that an incident of this nature can be concerning and we encourage people to contact us via 101 with any additional information they may have about the incident.”
