The bodies of Josh Bashford, 33, and his wife Chloe, 30, were found at a property on the grounds of Newhaven Cemetery near Lewes shortly after 7 pm on Friday. A man, Derek Martin, 64, – who is also known as Derek Glenn – of Brighton, was later charged with the murder of the couple, who share four children. Police say he was known to Josh and Chloe, though the nature of their relationship has yet to be revealed.
On Monday, he appeared in court wearing a grey sweatshirt and with a plaster on his right hand. Martin spoke only to confirm his name and address. He has been remanded in custody and will appear in Crown Court in the next 48 hours. People in the public gallery, believed to be the family members of Josh and Chloe, shouted ‘f***ing monster’ as he was taken back to the cells. Posting a series of photos of her daughter to Instagram, Chloe described herself as ‘lucky’. Two weeks before that, she shared another set of photos of her son, which she captioned ‘swinging with mumma’. Meanwhile, Josh’s last Facebook post saw him share two photos of his daughter, ten years apart. The clearly proud father captioned the photo: ‘Ten years fly by.’ The social media accounts of both parents are filled with photos of their children and their families have vowed to raise the kids in light of Josh and Chloe’s shocking deaths.
Chloe’s niece, Kayleigh Last, wrote: ‘My auntie and uncle. There are no words right now that can begin to describe how much I will miss you both. ‘Chloe you were my auntie and best friend. Josh, you were the funniest man that I’m so glad I got to call my uncle. Together you were the most beautiful couple and made the most beautiful children. I promise I will do everything I can to look after your four beautiful babies. Fly high together until we meet again.’ Her other niece Georgie added: ‘Words can not begin to explain the pain we are all feeling right now. Never did we think we would experience heartbreak and pain like this. The funniest and loving pair, you loved each other so much it was just amazing to see what true love looked like. ‘You were the most amazing parents to four beautiful, intelligent, and loving children. We will all do everything to make sure they are supported, loved, and looked after. ‘We all love you so much, forever and always in our hearts.’

The force said Martin of Moulsecoomb Way, Brighton, was arrested in connection with the incident shortly after their bodies were found and has been charged with two counts of murder. He was known to the victims. Martin has been remanded in custody and is due to appear before Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Monday, June 12. A post-mortem is scheduled to take place next week and police have said they will not be releasing any further details in the meantime. Detective Chief Inspector Kimball Edey, of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, said: ‘Our thoughts remain with the families of the two victims at this extremely difficult time. While our work to establish the exact circumstances of what happened are ongoing, we are not seeking anyone else in connection with the matter. I’d like to thank the public for their understanding and remind them not to speculate or comment on anything which could jeopardize our investigation in the meantime.’
