The body of John Edward Jones, who died at Nutty Putty Cave in Utah, has yet to be recovered more than a decade after his death. In 2009, Jones reportedly entered the cave on an expedition with his friends and family. He visited the site to cave dive and the group quickly split into two. The children and some adults went to see the less dangerous parts of the cave, while the rest had chosen to go deeper.
The cave had reportedly only been reopened to the public six months before Jones went to the site. There had been four incidents in the caves involving rescue attempts. Jones had gone into the less secure areas of the cave accompanied by his brother Josh, where the two had decided to search for a narrow tunnel that cavers had called the “birth canal.” However, according to LADBible, some of the caves did not yet have a defined route mapped out, leading the brothers to the wrong entrance.

How did Jones get inside the cave and what happened to him?
As the path ahead was very narrow and Jones was trapped in a narrow place, he had to crawl on his toes and hips and was unable to breathe or move freely. When he tried to get out through the hole, he breathed in to move but got stuck on the exhale. At this point, Jones called his brother to help him and Josh tried to pull his legs off of him, only to slide further into the cave and face down.
Josh then ended up climbing 400 feet from where he was trapped to call for help. When the rescue team arrived, Jones had been trapped at the scene for three hours. A 24+ hour rescue operation involving more than 100 people was carried out to help pull Jones out of the cave, however, they were unsuccessful.
Eventually, a plan was devised to use ropes and pulleys to lift Jones up. However, one of the pulleys broke and he got stuck right where he was again. Later, the rescue team tried to break the rock he was trapped in, but it was too late. Jones’s body had given out from the enormous pressure of being face down and struggling to breathe. Later, a doctor pronounced him dead from cardiac arrest.

In the end, it was decided that it was too dangerous to remove Jones’s body from the cave, so the part where he was stuck was collapsed with explosives and the entrance to Nutty Putty was sealed with concrete. Thus, the body of the diver has been trapped face down in the caves where he tragically died for more than ten years.
