Jodie Russell was driving her seven-year-old daughter Matilda from Tinana to Brisbane when their MG GS wagon collided with a Ford Ranger pulling a caravan around 3.45 pm on Friday. Ms. Russell died at the scene on the Bruce Highway, while Matilda, also known as Tilly, suffered minor injuries and was transferred to Gympie Hospital, where she is currently recovering. Tilly’s father, Chris Paterson, stated that ‘there was never a deeper bond between a mother and her daughter than the one Jodie shared with Tilly’. Jodie was so sensitive and understanding with everyone around her,’ he said in an interview with The Courier Mail.

Friends and family are banding together to ensure the girl’s future. Jo Howie, a family friend, has set up a GoFundMe page to help Matilda and her father, Chris Paterson. Ms. Russell and Matilda were supposed to travel to Brisbane for a ‘Mother’s Day weekend,’ but they never arrived. While we are grateful to have Tilly safe and well, this catastrophe has taken both her mother and her hero,’ the campaign adds. Ms. Russell’s grieving family has published a statement following her death as a Centrelink contact operator. We are grieved by her untimely death, and she will be sorely missed by all who loved her dearly,’ read a statement. She had a golden heart and a grin for everyone. She has left us with priceless memories that we will cherish forever,’ says the family.
A group of friends known as ‘The Pools Sharks/The Squad’ made a collective statement, as did Sammi, Kel, Alanna, and Zoe. Life will not be the same without you, but we are so grateful for the times and memories we enjoyed together,’ they said in a statement. The 76-year-old driver of the Ford Ranger was brought to Gympie Hospital with minor injuries, while a 72-year-old female passenger was transferred to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in serious condition with chest injuries.
