Jock Zonfrillo, award-winning chef and ‘MasterChef Australia’ judge, died on April 30 in Melbourne at the age of 46. Before becoming famous, Zonfrillo declared bankruptcy in 2007, five years after setting fire to a trainee chef for working too slowly. Then he went back and opened a few more successful restaurants in Adelaide, one of which was named Australia’s best four years ago. While he was working on MasterChef Australia, one of his acclaimed restaurants, Orana, closed in 2020 with a million-dollar debt.
Zonfrillo went openly about his struggles with obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety, and addiction in 2021.”It’s a real working-class problem to arrive somewhere and think you’re not good enough,” he admitted, according to the Daily Mail, adding, “For me, I’ve done that my entire life.” Every job I’ve had made me feel like I wasn’t good enough for it.” The actor also revealed that he wore a set of worry beads to help him cope with his mental illness. “When I’m nervous or anxious, my brain just starts racing, like I’m thinking irrationally,” he explained, adding, “I’ve got a set of worry beads on me all the time, so if they’re not in my hand, they’re in my pocket.” I’ve manufactured so many different kinds that they’re almost like an accessory.”
