Legendary singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett died Friday at age 76. Friday night, an announcement was made on his official Twitter account: “Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs. “He lived his life like a song until his last breath and will be missed beyond measure by many.” The two-time Grammy nominee, best known for his hit song Margaritaville, revealed in May that he had been hospitalized “to address some issues that needed immediate attention.” “Getting older is not for sissies, I promise you,” the 76-year-old billionaire tweeted at the time. Born on Christmas Day 1946 in Pascagoula, Mississippi, Buffett grew up in nearby Mobile, Alabama, where he developed a love of sailing from his grandfather. He began playing guitar while at Auburn University and subsequently moved to Nashville to release his first country album, “Down to Earth,” in 1970. But it was a trip to Key West in 1971 with country singer-songwriter Jerry Jeff Walker (“Mr. Bojangles”) that altered Buffett’s musical direction from outlaw country to folk-pop calypso. While Buffett generated a nonchalant persona through his upbeat songs that offered fans a musical escape from real life, he was also affirming his business acumen. In June 2023, Forbes listed Buffett’s worth at $1 billion. “If you are an artist, if you want to be in control of your life then you have to be a businessman, whether you like it or not,” Buffett told Forbes in 1994. “So the businessman went from being an artist.” Buffett told USA TODAY in 2022 that being “a sponge of ideas” helped him determine his many business projects. “It’s that unexpected phone call that comes and you say, ‘That sounds interesting.’ It has to be the right time, the right feeling and there also has to be a lot of luck.” But Buffett’s business development did not negate his creative efforts.
In addition to his 30 albums, he launched Margaritaville Records in the early ’90s, wrote several fiction books (including the bestsellers “Tales From Margaritaville” and “Where’s Joe Merchant?”) and ventured into film and television through musical contributions (“Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” “Urban Cowboy”) and cameos (“Jurassic World,” “NCIS: New Orleans”). In 2018, “Escape to Margaritaville” debuted on Broadway to mixed reviews and closed after five months; The musical continued as a touring production.
