The motorist, Jihad Gasaway, 23, was arrested Tuesday on charges of murder and abuse of a corpse in the death of Kemp Harriel, 26, according to a statement from the Iowa Department of Public Safety. The Iowa State Patrol had first spotted him shortly after 8 a.m. m. with his Chevrolet Malibu stranded on the shoulder of Interstate 80 in Poweshiek Count. “He reported that his vehicle had stopped and needed a jump start,” two responding police officers wrote in an affidavit. After calling for help, Gasaway allegedly told officers he had a Taurus 9mm handgun in his pocket, leading to a search and the gruesome discovery in the passenger seat, according to the affidavit.

Harriel’s body was hidden under clothing and he appeared to have suffered gunshot wounds,” authorities said. An autopsy later found that Harriel died from two gunshot wounds to the chest fired from the Taurus pistol, and the medical examiner ruled his manner of death a homicide. During a police interview, Gasaway allegedly said he and Harriel “got into this” while traveling together from Cedar Rapids to Des Moines, but claimed he didn’t know his passenger had died. He said he had covered for Harriel because he “thought he was too cold” and “didn’t know he was gone” until he “looked into the police’s eyes and read his lips,” according to the affidavit. “‘That’s when I started crying in the car,'” Gasaway told police, according to the affidavit. Gasaway is being held in the county jail on $50,000 bond. His next court hearing is scheduled for October 12.
