Riverside County deputies shot and killed a ‘mentally disturbed man who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia
Rodriguez, who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, allegedly grabbed a baseball bat with sharp metal spikes on the end, authorities say. The officers used a stun gun twice to no effect, and authorities say Rodriguez was ultimately shot as he advanced toward them.
“Deputies and then paramedics took life-saving measures, but Rodríguez was pronounced dead at the scene,” authorities said. The man’s family says he was having a mental health crisis when officers responded. They added that he had a BB gun and told dispatchers as much when they called for help. According to the family, the agents cleared the house before entering. When they entered, relatives say they heard shots.
“The police have been to my mother’s house so many times that they know he is schizophrenic,” said the man’s sister, Isabel Rodríguez. “She revealed to them that he had a BB gun, it was not a weapon. It was a BB gun.” There is no reason why they couldn’t have tasered it,” Rodríguez added. “They could have used a different type of method, especially since he is schizophrenic.” No deputies were injured in the incident.
