Jesús Alberto López Ortiz, 29, a Costa Rican soccer player, has tragically died after being eaten by a crocodile while bathing in a river to cool off. Jesús López Ortiz, nicknamed ‘Chucho’, died after the reptile mercilessly killed him on July 29 when he was trying to cool off in a river in Río Cañas, Guanacaste province, Costa Rica. The gruesome footage shows the father of two fighting for life as the animal dragged him through its jaws. Another clip shows the crocodile shot dead in the water and carried to the riverbank, with local residents saying they followed it in a canoe to retrieve Chucho’s body.

The victim was a football player from Deportivo Río Cañas who leaves behind his young children, ages three and eight. Chucho’s family is calling on members of the public to help pay for his funeral costs. His team manager, Luis Carlos Montes, is also organizing a collection for the victim’s family. His team said in a post on social media: “We will remember you in the many facets of your sporting life as a coach, soccer player and also as a family man.” You will always live in our hearts Chucho, fly high my friend. The Costa Rican Ministry of Environment and Energy prohibits the hunting or killing of protected animals such as crocodiles. It is not currently known if the department is investigating the decision of the locals to kill the alligator so that the locals could collect the body. Local police said in a statement: “It should be noted that every effort was made to rescue the body of the deceased without causing harm to the reptile, which was not possible.”
