Jerry Springer, the TV talk show host and television personality who briefly served as mayor of Cincinnati, died on Thursday morning, his publicist confirmed. He was 79. Springer died quietly on Thursday morning at his Chicago home following an illness, according to the Associated Press.
“Jerry’s ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried, whether that was politics, broadcasting, or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word,” Jene Galvin, a family spokesperson and friend of Springer’s since 1970, said in a statement following his death. “He is irreplaceable, and his loss is heartbreaking, but memories of his intellect, heart, and humor will live on.”

Springer, a former attorney, and politician, was elected as Cincinnati’s 56th mayor in 1977 and served in that capacity until 1978. He is best known for his namesake talk program, “Jerry Springer,” which aired for over three decades and frequently featured dysfunctional families. Springer later starred for a brief time on the popular competition show “America’s Got Talent” in 2007 and 2008 before moving on to anchor the NBC courtroom reality series “Judge Jerry.”
Springer began his political career with a congressional race in 1970 before rising to national fame on television. Although he lost, the race helped him get elected to the Cincinnati City Council the following year, where he served for three years before resigning in 1974 due to a well-documented sex abuse scandal. Springer rose to global prominence with the introduction of his extremely popular, albeit culturally criticized, talk show “Jerry Springer” on daytime television in 1991.

Springer generated some attention in political circles throughout his rise in the entertainment world. There was speculation in 2003 that he may run for a position in the United States Senate, but his path to Congress was ultimately halted by the show.
Springer was born in London on February 13, 1944, and moved to the United States as a child, settling in Queens. He began his political career as an adviser to Robert F. Kennedy and then transferred to a position at a Cincinnati law firm after Kennedy’s death. Springer married Micki Velton in 1973, and the couple was married for over 20 years before divorcing in 1994. Katie Springer, their only child, was born in 1976.
