Jeremiah D. Johnson the suspect – On Saturday night, a deputy from St. Croix County, Wisconsin, was shot and died while responding to a probably intoxicated driver who drove into a ditch.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Deputy Kaitie Leising, 29, arrived at the site of the car accident in Glenwood, Wisconsin, at 6:15 p.m. on Saturday and met the driver, Jeremiah Johnson, 34. Prior to Leising’s arrival, another car had stopped to aid Johnson. The constable asked Johnson to take field sobriety tests before returning to his vehicle, but he refused. After about eight minutes, Johnson turned towards Leising, grabbed a revolver, and shot her, according to the DOJ.

The individuals in the vehicle that stopped to help Johnson started CPR on Leising, who was transferred to a local hospital and subsequently died. Officers who went to the site searched the woods nearby, and nearly an hour later, an officer discovered Johnson, heard a shot and witnessed him fall to the ground. Officers discovered a firearm near where Johnson was discovered dead. According to the DOJ, officers did not discharge their weapons throughout the search for Johnson.
The investigation is being led by the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Justice, with support from neighboring law enforcement departments, the Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Wisconsin State Crime Lab. St. Croix County Sheriff Scott Knudson reported the death of the 29-year-old constable on Sunday.
According to the sheriff, Leising has been with the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office since 2022, and before that, she worked for the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office in South Dakota for almost two years. Our hearts go out to Kaitie Leising’s family and all those she served with,” Sheriff Knudson stated. “As a law enforcement family, we will do everything in our power to continue to support and comfort her family.” Her sparkling smile and personality will be missed. “She will be remembered fondly by everyone she touched.”
