Jatonne Sterling, a former standout athlete from Chicago’s Morgan Park High School was shot and killed while away at college.
Sterling initially came from Chicago, where he stood out in baseball and obtained a scholarship to play for panthers in division II. Sterling was starting his sophomore season with the Panthers, who opened the 2023 season 3-12. They are set for a three-game series with Miles College this weekend.

Kontay Holliman-Peoples arrested in shooting death of Baseball Player
Police arrested Kontay Holliman-Peoples, 25, in relation to the shooting, accusing him of murder for serious crime and aggravated assault. According to officers, Sterling and Holliman-Peoples were known and put themselves in dispute.
“We know that there was a certain correspondence before Tuesday and even as early as Tuesday morning,” the Atlanta Police Vice President Charles Hampton Jr. said Thursday during a press conference. “This was not a random homicide.”
Hampton added that Sterling entered a vehicle parked with Holliman people and another unidentified individual, after which there was an intensified dispute that caused shots inside the car.
The authorities responded to the Lyke House Catholic center just before 2:00 pm, where they found Sterling and declared him dead at the scene. Following the shooting, the students organized a vigil on the Clark Atlanta campus, gathering to remember their life.
The University paid tribute to him, writing on Twitter: ‘Our hearts and prayers are with the family, friends and teammates of our student Jatonne Sterling. “Please keep your family and the whole community of Cau in their prayers.” In his free time, Sterling also followed a music race, which he strongly promoted on his Instagram page.
