Jason Murphy, a man whose body was found in the shallows of a popular Sydney beach wrote a chilling note on his hospital discharge papers moments before he died. Jason Murphy’s body was found by surfers on Cronulla Beach in the south of the city around 6:30 a.m. m. of March 23. Police said the 39-year-old’s death was not being treated as suspicious. She launched a Change.org petition to try to change healthcare policies and force health centers to notify a friend or family member when a mental health patient is discharged. “I strongly believe that if I had been given a call, being Jason’s next of kin, then I would have been aware of his need for support that day,” she said. “The system is broken and many lives are being lost due to deaf ears and a system overrun.” An NSW Health spokesperson told there is an investigation into the way Mr. Murphy’s case was handled. “NSW Health is investigating the care provided to Mr. Murphy following his voluntary admission to St George’s Hospital, including the circumstances surrounding his discharge from care,” the spokesperson said. The South East Sydney Local Health District met with Ms. Murphy last week to hear her concerns about her brother’s care and answer her questions.

The spokesperson said the department expressed its sincere condolences and would keep Ms. Murphy informed of the progress of the investigation. A close friend, Johana Wallace, set up a GoFundMe page Saturday to raise money for Murphy’s funeral. The brothers have no other family to help cover the costs, and Ms. Murphy underwent spinal surgery in December and has been unable to work. “Lydia is the kindest person and she will always be there for others, but she finds it very difficult to ask for help as she has always had to depend on herself and her brother,” said Ms. Wallace. “With the passing of her brother and having no family or parents to help her with her funeral arrangements and expenses, she is left alone to navigate and figure it all out.” Murphy’s funeral will take place in Sydney’s western suburbs on April 12.
