Jarrett Garrett McCabe, 47, was guarding a bus stop in Lakeland after a neighbor told him two boys had jumped on his son Monday, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said. He was waiting to see if they were going to fight with his son again, but when they got off the bus, McCabe confronted them, police said. McCabe told police he slapped one of the children with an open hand. According to a DoorDash driver who witnessed the assault, McCabe punched the boy in the face and twice in the stomach.

Florida man previously convicted of murder, arrested for assaulting teenager at a bus stop
Investigators later learned that McCabe’s son had gotten into a fight with one of the teens (the boy McCabe hit) weeks ago and the other, who was with the victim, on Monday. But he didn’t get into either fight, police said. The boy who fought with McCabe’s son on Monday and his mother spoke to McCabe and the boy apologized for fighting with his son after the incident. “It’s understandable that a parent would be upset that their child was assaulted, but waiting at a bus stop to hit a child is not the kind of example you want to set for your child,” said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, in a statement. “Based on this and his criminal history, he clearly has anger management issues.” McCabe was booked into the Polk County Jail on a charge of simple assault, WFLA reported. His criminal history includes previous convictions for second-degree murder, aggravated assault with a weapon and shooting/throwing a deadly missile at a building or vehicle, police said. He served six years and 11 months in Florida State Prison.
