A vehicle collided with a Kansas City police cruiser on Wednesday, February 15, killing police officer James Muhlbauer, a police dog and a pedestrian, according to Missouri authorities. According to the Kansas City police news release, the officer was on patrol when the accident occurred.
The officer has been identified as Muhlbauer, a 20-year veteran of the Kansas Police Department, and the police dog as K-9 Champ. The driver, who struck the patrol car, suffered minor injuries and was taken into custody, police said.
The pedestrian and the dog died at the scene while the officer passed away at a hospital. Kansas City police said K9-Champ was with the KCPD for a year and lived with Muhlbauer and his family. Sharing that they were injured, they said in a press release and tribute that they also posted on Facebook.

“RIP Officer James Muhlbauer and K-9 Officer Champ,” KCPD wrote in a news release. “The partners were killed in the line of duty Wednesday night when a vehicle struck them while on patrol,” they said, adding: “Muhlbauer was a 20-year veteran of KCPD while K-9 Champ was with us for an anus. Sharing, “We’re hurt.” Police said, “K-9 Champ lived with Muhlbauer and his family. Mulhbauer was married and a father. Please pray for them.”

With the police revealing the identity of the officer and the police dog, shocked internet users are reacting to the post by paying tribute and mourning the tragic loss. “Oh this is horrible! We are so sorry for the loss of him and sending our love to everyone involved and touched by this!” wrote one. “Very tragic. Sending support and warmth to the family and department,” another user wrote. One said, “RIP Jim. Thank you for your years of service to our community.” One more wrote: “Prayers to @kcpolice, family of officers, friends. Thank you for your service.”
