A vehicle collided with a Kansas City police cruiser on Wednesday, February 15, killing police officer James Muhlbauer, a police dog and a pedestrian, according to Missouri authorities. According to the Kansas City police news release, the officer was on patrol when the accident occurred.
The officer has been identified as Muhlbauer, a 20-year veteran of the Kansas Police Department, and the police dog as K-9 Champ. The driver, who struck the patrol car, suffered minor injuries and was taken into custody, police said.
The pedestrian and the dog died at the scene while the officer passed away at a hospital. Kansas City police said K9-Champ was with the KCPD for a year and lived with Muhlbauer and his family. Sharing that they were injured, they said in a press release and tribute that they also posted on Facebook.

With the police revealing the identity of the officer and the police dog, shocked internet users are reacting to the post by paying tribute and mourning the tragic loss. “Oh this is horrible! We are so sorry for the loss of him and sending our love to everyone involved and touched by this!” wrote one. “Very tragic.
